Excellent Teacher

Congratulations to Don Christie ('75), who was one of 15 teachers across the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board to receive an Excellence in Teaching award this year.

Christie started teaching at Oxford Regional High School in 1976 after attending Mount A where he earned a bachelor of science degree in three years. He was offered a full scholarship to go anywhere in the world and study anything science-related.

He wanted to go to work, so he turned it down, took a bachelor of education degree, and went to Oxford Regional High School.

Grad Heading to Ethiopia

Recent grad Roberta MacLean ('07) is one of 10 Canadian youth who will soon begin a six-month placement overseas with a development organization as part of the Coady International Institute’s Youth In Partnership (YIP) Program.

Roberta will leave on July 24, 2007 to begin her work with the Kembatti Mentti Gezzima (KMG) organization in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Read her story:
The Summerside, PEI native says she wanted to participate in the unique internship program to gain valuable hands-on experience, and to witness as well as understand the obstacles faced each day by minority populations.

“I want to apply and expand on the knowledge that I gained while at Mount Allison by actually putting it in action in a new and diverse setting.”

Roberta emphasizes that she believes this is important, as she plans to do a master’s degree in social policy and believes that this practical experience is needed in order to balance her perspective gained from living a “privileged life” in Canada.

This commitment to community involvement and social development is not new though.

Roberta graduated from Mount Allison this spring with a bachelor of arts in psychology.

Throughout her university career, she was involved in a number of organizations, including the Town of Sackville’s Best Buddies program (working with mentally-challenged adults). She also served as an off-campus councilor with the Students’ Administrative Council, and as Shinerama chair at Mount Allison, one of the largest fund raising campaigns for Cystic Fibrosis that takes place on campuses across the country each Fall.

Who are we, anyway?

Here's a picture of the lovely people of the External Relations Department at a conference in PEI this past June.

ER includes the Development Office, the Alumni Office and Communications. Presently, we are a group of very hard-working women. What's great is that we actually all get along great! Especially the first Wednesday of every month, which is POT LUCK DAY!

Right now, I'm working on staff profiles with pictures so you'll be able to read all about our staff in the near future. I think it's always great to have a face to a name, don't you?

NEW SITE!

I am extremely happy to announce that our new Development Office site is finally up and running!

I think we can all agree that it was hard to figure out how to "Give to Mount A" on our old site. My goal with this new site was to make it easier, and also to let people know what exactly we do over here at External Relations!

I will be keeping it up to date, and I still have a few things to add, like staff profiles with pictures.

Please check it out, and let me know what you think!
